Awards and Rankings

Our main objective is to provide a high quality legal service and the best result possible for our client, be it completing a house purchase or a complicated business transaction, dealing with complex domestic or international family issues, immigration or employment issues or in providing a fully comprehensive criminal defence service for both individuals and businesses. 

It is particularly rewarding when our work is recognised by our clients and others in the industry. We are especially proud of the recognition that we have received from a number of leading directories and for the awards earned by our specialist teams.  


The Legal 500

The Legal 500 is a directory of the most highly regarded law firms and practitioners in the UK. The directory is compiled using independent researchers who speak to clients, to other law firms and to professionals such as barristers to find out more about us and how good we are.

Howard Freeman has been in recommended  in the directory for his skills as a commercial property lawyer in 2011, 2012 and again in 2013. Comments about Howard include that he "has notable expertise in retail and office leases, investment sales and purchases, and developments" and is "very approachable, has a vast amount of knowledge and is always available when needed."

Our Family department has been ranked every year since 2012. In the 2018 edition the department was ranked Tier 2 described as “...a strong reputation for handling international child abduction and other cross-border matters such as enforcement under the Brussels 11 Revised Regulation. Team head Nina Hansen has ‘reached the top of her upward trajectory in the field of international children’s cases; she is equally at ease representing HNW individuals as well as damaged children’. Laura Coyle is ‘child focused, pragmatic and forensically analytical all combined with a dose of common sense’. Newly promoted partner Hilka Hollmann is highly recommended for international adoption – ‘what she doesn’t know about this subject isn’t worth knowing’. Mark Kosmin is ‘excellent on detail and keeping to deadlines; he is not the kind of solicitor to miss something important’.

In the 2018 edition there was also special recognition for individuals within the family department. Head of the department and Partner Nina Hansen ranked as a ‘Leading Individual’ in the field, with partner Hilka Hollmann ranked as a ‘Next Generation Lawyer’ and Partners Laura Coyle and Mark Kosmin endorsed as ‘Recommended Lawyers’.

Our Criminal department has appeared in Legal 500 since 2012. In the 2017 edition we were ranked and described as going "well beyond what is expected in terms of client care and preparation", and further that our crime team’s "steely determination obtains the best possible results’" ‘Excellent advocateMichael Field co-heads the department with Kishoree Kotecha-Pau, who "is an expert in every aspect of criminal law. Recent work includes a mix of fraud, extradition, and serious violence cases."

The current edition again ranked the department, describing it as one that ‘, often goes well beyond the call of duty.’ …and... 'a firm that  deals with a broad range of general crime matters including serious fraud, extradition, sexual assault, violent crime, and murder.' Michael Field jointly heads the team with Kishoree Kotecha-Pau who has ‘great depth of experience and knowledge of the criminal justice process’ and ‘combines professionalism with humanity, charm, warmth and hard graft.

In the 2018 edition, both partners Kishoree Kotecha-Pau and Michael Field continued to maintain their position as ‘Recommended Lawyers’ in crime.

Chambers and Partners Guide UK

Each year, Chambers and Partners UK conduct extensive, independent research into the UK legal profession and identify leading lawyers and law firms.

Our Family department has been ranked in the UK guide every year since 2013. In the recent 2019 Guide the department was ranked in Band 2 for their work in Children cross-border disputes and Band 2 for their work in Children: Public Law Matters. The specialist Children team of the Freemans Family Department was describe in the latest Guide as: "Robust offering in the cross-border and public children spheres, with noted strength exhibited in international issues, particularly in child abduction and leave to remove cases. Committed to representing vulnerable individuals and making its services affordable. Clients include parents, guardians and teenagers in a position to instruct legal support. Acts across an impressive range of cases, from the most serious radicalisation and abuse allegations to lower-scale matters." Notable strength being: “The care and empathy among the staff stands out, especially when you are going through a complex case. People talk about being client-oriented, but Freemans are more than that: they’re humanity oriented”.

In the 2019 Guide Head of the Family department and Partner Nina Hansen received special recognition in band 1 for both Children Cross Border Disputes & Public Law Matters. Described as “one of the top childcare solicitors in the country... fearless in the pursuit of her clients’ interests...(and)...a fierce negotiator”. Partner Laura Coyle was ranked as an "Up and Coming Individual" in Public Law Matters, described as “an outstanding advocate...very clever, and committed to the welfare of young people”, whilst newly promoted Partner Hilka Hollmann, was ranked an “Associate to watch” in Children Cross Border Disputes category described a “superb lawyer”“(acting) on a range of serious public law cases...involving issues of abuse and radicalisation, as well as handling foreign adoption and abduction matters”.

Our Criminal  department has been mentioned in the UK guide for several years. In the 2018 edition clients said we are "... well organised and very responsive to clients' needs. It has good facilities and very supportive staff; you are made to feel very welcome" and "This firm is absolutely excellent, and they have recruited some of the best people to work for them. They are all amazing, helpful, kind, considerate, committed and extremely knowledgeable about their work."

The current guide describes us a ‘Strong criminal practice experienced in acting on high-profile, serious cases. Frequently deals with heavyweight criminal charges, including murder, sexual offences, and GBH. Also advises on terrorism-related charges. Regularly takes on complex matters relating to groups, including joint enterprise murder and organised crime cases.’

Sources described our criminal lawyers as "very good, very hard-working and very experienced - they work tirelessly for their clients and the quality of their work is excellent."

The entry also describes us as: "A very helpful and multidisciplinary firm with good all-round strength."

In the 2018 guide Partner Kishoree Kotecha-Pau was ranked and described as "an excellent people person (who) gets result, resources cases well and is extremely up to date with the law".


We are honoured and proud to have won two awards at the 2018 UK Diversity Legal Awards. Freemans were winners of the Managing Diverse Talent Award. Partner and joint head of the criminal department Kishoree Kotecha-Pau received a Highly Commended BSN Lifetime Achievement Award. The awards are recognition of our efforts in promoting diversity, inclusion and equality across in the legal profession.

We are delighted that our family department has been awarded Adoption Law Firm of the Year, and the crime department Business Crime firm of the year by Lawyer Monthly for 2017.

In 2016 we were also proud that our family department were shortlisted at the Jordans Family Law Awards in various categories; Regional Firm of the Year (London), Partner of the Year for Partner Nina Hansen, and Associate of the Year for the then Associate Laura Coyle (now Partner). 

We were also pleased that Kishoree Kotecha-Pau was awarded Society of Asian Lawyers Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year in 2013 "for her unstinting dedication to assisting those on Legal Aid and her active involvement in the campaign to protect those who may lose this valuable right."
